Fresh concerns have emerged over the security situation in Oyo State following the abduction of a 60-year-old primary school headmaster, who was reportedly seized by armed gunmen demanding ₦30 million for his release.
According to reports, the victim was kidnapped by heavily armed assailants while travelling within the state. Shortly after the abduction, the kidnappers allegedly established contact with members of his family and demanded a ransom of ₦30 million, warning against involving security agencies in efforts to secure his freedom.
Family members and residents have appealed to the Federal Government, the Oyo State Government, and security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the headmaster unharmed and apprehend those responsible for the crime.
The incident has renewed fears among residents, particularly within the education sector, where teachers and school administrators have increasingly become targets of criminal gangs operating across parts of the country.
The latest abduction comes only days after authorities announced the rescue of dozens of schoolchildren and teachers who had earlier been kidnapped in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. That incident attracted nationwide attention after one of the abducted teachers was reportedly killed while negotiations for the victims’ release were ongoing.
Security experts have repeatedly warned that the growing trend of kidnapping for ransom poses a serious threat to public safety, education, and economic activities. They argue that criminal groups have become increasingly emboldened due to the financial rewards associated with ransom payments and the difficulty of tracking perpetrators.
Although security agencies have not released full details of the latest abduction, investigations are said to be underway, while efforts have been intensified to locate the victim and rescue him safely.
The kidnapping has also sparked renewed calls for stronger intelligence gathering, increased surveillance along major roads, improved community policing, and closer collaboration between security agencies and local communities to curb the rising wave of abductions across Nigeria.
Residents have urged the authorities to act swiftly, expressing concern that attacks on educators could discourage teachers from serving in vulnerable communities and further disrupt learning in already underserved areas.
The victim remains in captivity as of the time of filing this report, while negotiations and rescue efforts continue.
