Residents of Edo State have been advised to restrict their movements on Saturday as the Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with other security agencies, announced comprehensive security measures ahead of the state’s local government elections.
The police said the temporary movement restriction is aimed at ensuring a peaceful, orderly and credible electoral process while preventing electoral violence, vote-buying, ballot box snatching and other forms of criminal activity that could disrupt the polls.
According to the security directive, movement across the state will be restricted during the hours designated for voting, with only accredited officials of the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC), election observers, journalists with valid accreditation, medical emergency personnel and other essential service providers permitted to move freely.
The command warned political actors, supporters and members of the public against carrying firearms, dangerous weapons or engaging in any activity capable of undermining the electoral process. Security agencies also cautioned against the movement of political convoys near polling units and collation centres, stressing that violators would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The police assured residents that adequate personnel have been deployed across the state’s 18 local government areas to safeguard voters, electoral officials, election materials and other critical infrastructure throughout the exercise.
Citizens were encouraged to remain law-abiding, cooperate with security operatives and promptly report suspicious activities that could threaten the conduct of the election.
The restriction forms part of standard election security protocols adopted during major elections in Nigeria. Authorities say the measure is designed to reduce the movement of political thugs, curb voter intimidation and create a secure environment that allows eligible voters to exercise their constitutional right without fear.
Political parties and candidates have also been urged to caution their supporters against violence and to embrace the outcome of the election through lawful means should disputes arise.
The Edo State local government election is expected to determine the leadership of the state’s local councils, with security agencies expressing confidence that the coordinated deployment of personnel will ensure a peaceful and credible exercise.
