The Federal Government has confirmed that all the schoolchildren, teachers, and the school principal abducted during the May 15 attack on Ahoro-Esiele Community in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have been rescued, bringing an end to weeks of anxiety for their families and communities.
The victims were kidnapped after heavily armed gunmen invaded the community and attacked a school, abducting 46 people, including pupils, teachers, and the school principal. The incident triggered widespread outrage across Nigeria and renewed concerns over the worsening security situation in the country’s schools.
The kidnapping later took a tragic turn when one of the abducted teachers, Michael Oyedokun, was reportedly killed by the kidnappers, despite ongoing efforts to secure the release of the victims.
Authorities have now announced that the remaining hostages have regained their freedom. However, officials are yet to disclose the circumstances surrounding the rescue, including whether the victims were freed through a military operation, negotiations, or the payment of ransom.
Security agencies have also not confirmed whether any suspects were arrested during the operation or if investigations are ongoing to track down those responsible for the attack.
The successful rescue comes after weeks of intense public pressure, appeals from community leaders, and concerns from civil society organizations over the safety of the abducted children and teachers.
The Oyo school abduction was one of several high-profile kidnapping incidents recorded across Nigeria in recent months, highlighting the persistent challenge of insecurity, particularly in rural communities where schools remain vulnerable to attacks by armed groups.
Security analysts say the rescue provides relief for affected families but also underscores the urgent need for stronger intelligence gathering, improved rural policing, and better protection of educational institutions to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Families of the rescued victims are expected to undergo reunification processes, while medical examinations and psychological support may be provided to help them recover from the trauma of captivity.
Authorities are expected to provide further details on the rescue operation in the coming hours.
This is a developing story. Active Citizens Media will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
