ABUJA, Nigeria – A serving Nigerian Army Colonel, Abdussalam A. Ude, has been killed by suspected gunmen during an attack at his residence in the Kurudu area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), while his wife sustained gunshot injuries in the incident.
According to security sources, the attack occurred shortly after the senior military officer arrived home. The armed assailants reportedly attempted to abduct him, but the colonel resisted, leading to an exchange during which he was shot multiple times. His wife was also hit by gunfire before the attackers fled the scene.
The injured woman was rushed to a medical facility, where she is receiving treatment. Authorities have not released detailed information about her condition, while security agencies have launched an investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
Colonel Ude, a military intelligence officer, was widely regarded by colleagues as an experienced and dedicated officer. Reports indicate that he was due for promotion to the rank of Brigadier General next year before his untimely death.
The incident has intensified concerns over the deteriorating security situation in and around the Federal Capital Territory. Although Abuja remains Nigeria’s seat of government, residents have increasingly expressed fears over rising cases of kidnappings, armed robberies, and violent attacks in suburban districts and along major access roads.
Security analysts argue that attacks targeting senior security personnel demonstrate the boldness of criminal groups and underscore the need for stronger intelligence gathering, rapid emergency response, and improved policing of residential communities around the FCT.
The killing of a senior military officer is also expected to reignite national debate over Nigeria’s broader security challenges and the effectiveness of existing measures to combat kidnapping and organized armed violence.
