[BREAKING] PFIPC scandal: Senate rejects motion to investigate controversial N1.3bn allocation

Nigeria’s Senate has rejected a motion calling for an investigation into the controversial ₦1.3 billion budget allocation connected to the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC) scandal.

The decision comes amid growing public scrutiny over the alleged inclusion of the allocation in the 2026 federal budget for an entity whose legal status and operational existence have been questioned. The controversy has fueled demands for greater transparency and accountability in the nation’s budgeting process.

Lawmakers who supported the motion argued that an investigation was necessary to determine how the allocation was approved, identify those responsible, and restore public confidence in government institutions. However, the motion failed to gain the Senate’s approval, effectively halting any immediate legislative probe.

The PFIPC scandal has attracted widespread national attention following allegations that individuals operated under the guise of the council and benefited from government recognition despite concerns over its legitimacy. The controversy has also reignited debates about budget oversight, the verification of government agencies, and the effectiveness of internal controls within public institutions.

Critics of the Senate’s decision argue that rejecting the motion could undermine public confidence in the legislature’s oversight responsibilities, while supporters maintain that existing investigative processes and law enforcement agencies are already handling aspects of the matter.

The development is expected to intensify calls from civil society organizations, anti-corruption advocates, and opposition figures for a comprehensive review of public expenditure and stronger safeguards against questionable budget allocations.

As investigations by relevant authorities continue, the PFIPC controversy remains one of the most closely watched governance issues, with many Nigerians demanding full accountability for those involved.
