A United States film director has been sentenced to prison after being found guilty of defrauding global streaming platform Netflix of millions of dollars earmarked for the production of a science fiction television series.
According to U.S. prosecutors, the filmmaker diverted funds provided by Netflix for personal luxury spending instead of using the money to complete the planned production. Authorities said the scheme resulted in substantial financial losses for the streaming company.
Investigators revealed that the director allegedly used part of the production budget to purchase luxury vehicles, expensive watches, high-end furniture, cryptocurrency investments and other personal items unrelated to the film project.
The fraudulent activities came to light after irregularities were discovered in the project’s financial records, prompting an investigation by federal authorities. Prosecutors said the defendant deliberately misrepresented how the production funds were being spent while falsely assuring Netflix that work on the project was progressing as planned.
Following legal proceedings, the court convicted the filmmaker on charges related to wire fraud and money laundering before imposing a prison sentence. In addition to the custodial sentence, the court ordered financial penalties, including restitution to compensate for the losses incurred by Netflix.

Netflix has not indicated whether the abandoned project will be revived with a different production team. However, the company reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining strict financial controls and protecting investments made in original productions.
