The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).
The declaration was announced on Friday, August 21, by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.
The announcement was contained in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and the diaspora, urging citizens to use the occasion to reflect on the values exemplified by Prophet Muhammad, particularly compassion, humility and service to others.
The minister stressed that these values remain particularly important as Nigeria confronts various social and national challenges.
He also called on Nigerians to use the Eid ul Mawlid celebration to pray for peace, unity and national cohesion, stressing that maintaining the country’s unity is a collective responsibility.
Nigerians were further encouraged to celebrate peacefully, with restraint and mutual respect for one another.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and promoting peaceful coexistence across the country.
With the declaration, Tuesday, August 25, will be observed as a nationwide public holiday, giving workers and Muslim faithful across Nigeria an opportunity to commemorate Eid ul Mawlid.
The holiday also provides another opportunity for Nigerians, irrespective of religious affiliation, to reflect on the importance of tolerance, peaceful coexistence and national unity.
