BREAKING: NLC Declares Indefinite Strike in Delta Over Death of Deputy Chairman at Secretariat

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Delta State Council, has declared an indefinite strike following the death of its Deputy Chairman, Comrade Goodluck Ofobruku, at the union’s secretariat in Asaba.

The industrial action was announced on Friday, September 25, 2026, as organised labour reacted to the circumstances surrounding Ofobruku’s death.

According to the NLC, the decision followed an emergency meeting of the State Executive Council, where labour leaders reviewed the incident and resolved that workers should withdraw their services indefinitely.

The congress said the strike would remain in force until its concerns surrounding the incident are adequately addressed.

The development is expected to affect government offices and other sectors where unions affiliated with the NLC have significant membership across Delta State.

The action also comes at a sensitive period for industrial relations in the state. Earlier this week, allied health workers in Delta suspended a separate strike following government commitments concerning outstanding uniform allowances and continued negotiations over other demands.

Attention will now turn to the response of the Delta State Government and whether discussions with labour leaders can lead to a resolution and the suspension of the indefinite strike.

The immediate issue remains the circumstances surrounding the death at the NLC secretariat and the demands organised labour wants addressed before workers return to their duty posts.
