Isese Day 2026: Oyo Declares Thursday, August 20 Work-Free Day

The Oyo State Government has declared Thursday, August 20, 2026, a work-free day to commemorate this year’s Isese Day, giving residents and workers an opportunity to participate in activities celebrating Yoruba traditional religion and cultural heritage.

The declaration was approved by Governor Seyi Makinde and announced in a memo signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Musibau Babatunde, on Wednesday, August 19.

According to the state government, the work-free day is intended to allow residents to participate fully in the celebration while also offering prayers for peace, unity and stability in Oyo State and Nigeria.

Governor Makinde also extended his felicitations to adherents of African Traditional Religion in Oyo State, across Nigeria and beyond, wishing them a successful and spiritually fulfilling celebration.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to religious fairness and inclusiveness, while acknowledging the contribution of traditional worshippers to the state.

Isese Day, observed annually on August 20, celebrates Yoruba indigenous traditions, spirituality and cultural heritage. The occasion has increasingly gained official recognition across several states in South-West Nigeria.

The Oyo government said its recognition of Isese Day also forms part of efforts to promote cultural tourism and preserve the state’s indigenous heritage, which the Makinde administration considers an important potential driver of economic development.

The declaration means eligible workers in Oyo State will have Thursday free to participate in activities marking the celebration.

Importantly, Isese Day is not a nationwide Federal Government public holiday. Its work-free status is determined by individual state governments. Several South-West states have, however, officially recognised the annual celebration.
