2027 Presidency: Atiku Says This Will Be His Final Presidential Contest

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared that the 2027 presidential election will be his final attempt to become Nigeria’s president, ruling out another presidential bid in 2031.

Atiku, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made the declaration during a Hausa-language interview, saying he would not return for another presidential contest if he fails to win in 2027.

Asked directly whether he would contest again if he lost the forthcoming election, Atiku replied: “No, I have said it before, right from this election, I will not contest again.”

The announcement gives additional significance to Atiku’s 2027 campaign, potentially turning the election into the defining final chapter of his decades-long pursuit of Nigeria’s highest political office.

Atiku has been one of the most prominent figures in Nigerian politics since the return to civilian rule in 1999. He served as Vice President under President Olusegun Obasanjo from 1999 to 2007 and has subsequently made several attempts to secure the presidency.

His declaration comes as campaigning for the 2027 general election gets underway, with President Bola Tinubu seeking re-election and opposition candidates attempting to convince Nigerians that they offer a better alternative.

Atiku also used his remarks to encourage Nigerians with Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to participate actively in the election and exercise their right to choose the country’s next leadership.

The declaration could reshape the political narrative around his campaign. For Atiku and his supporters, 2027 is no longer simply another presidential election — it is being presented as his last opportunity to finally reach Aso Rock.

That leaves one major political question: Can Atiku turn his final presidential attempt into the victory that has eluded him for decades?
