The Federal Government of Nigeria has congratulated the Government and people of Mexico on the country’s 216th Independence Anniversary, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic, economic and commercial relations between both nations.
Mexico marked its Independence Day on September 16, 2026, commemorating the beginning of the independence movement in 1810. Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs formally issued its congratulatory message on the anniversary.
In a statement signed by the Ministry’s spokesperson, Oluwafemi Adeniyi, the Federal Government praised Mexico’s nation-building journey, highlighting the courage, determination and resilience of its people as well as the country’s rich cultural heritage.
Nigeria also used the occasion to reaffirm the longstanding relationship between the two countries.
Formal diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Mexico were established in 1976, meaning the two countries are marking approximately five decades of official diplomatic ties in 2026. Their relationship has expanded across political dialogue, economic cooperation and consular affairs.
A significant recent development was the establishment of the Nigeria-Mexico Consultation Mechanism on Matters of Mutual Interest, inaugurated in Abuja in November 2025. The framework is intended to provide a more structured platform for political consultations and bilateral cooperation.
Beyond diplomatic relations, Nigeria said it wants to expand trade, investment and business exchanges with Mexico, with both countries exploring opportunities capable of delivering measurable economic benefits.
At Mexico’s Independence Day celebration in Abuja, Mexican officials similarly expressed interest in expanding cooperation with Nigeria in sectors including agriculture, automobiles, oil and gas, and technology.
The anniversary therefore comes at a potentially important moment for relations between Africa’s most populous country and one of Latin America’s largest economies.
For Nigeria, deeper ties with Mexico could provide opportunities for Nigerian businesses seeking access to Latin American markets, while Mexican companies could explore investment opportunities in Nigeria’s agriculture, energy, manufacturing and technology sectors.
Mexico’s 216th anniversary was also marked at home by President Claudia Sheinbaum, who led national Independence Day ceremonies centred on the country’s history, sovereignty and national identity.
Nigeria’s message goes beyond diplomatic congratulations. It signals an intention to turn decades of friendly relations into stronger economic and commercial partnerships.
The key question now is whether that diplomatic goodwill will translate into increased trade, investment, technology partnerships and jobs for citizens of both countries.
