The Osun State Government has approved the establishment of a Joint Security Task Force (JSTF) as part of new measures to strengthen security operations and protect lives and property across the state following recent security alerts.
The decision was reached at a meeting of the Osun State Security Council convened by Governor Ademola Adeleke and presided over by Deputy Governor Prince Kola Adewusi. The newly deployed Commissioner of Police in the state, Ibrahim Zungura, and other security commanders attended the meeting.
In a statement issued on Thursday, September 17, 2026, Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment Kolapo Alimi said the state government would provide the logistics required for the task force to take off and operate effectively.
According to the government, the initiative is designed to strengthen coordination among security agencies and improve the state’s ability to respond to threats against residents and communities.
The Security Council also directed the Nigeria Police and other security agencies to maintain a 24-hour red alert in response to reported threats involving suspected terrorists and bandits.
Particular attention is being placed on churches, mosques and schools, with residents and managers of such facilities urged to remain vigilant and strengthen security arrangements around their premises.
The government also appealed to residents to provide security agencies with timely and credible intelligence, arguing that information from communities could help authorities prevent possible attacks before they occur.
Traditional rulers have similarly been asked to strengthen their security oversight within their communities and maintain cooperation with security agencies.
The heightened measures follow recent security alerts in the state. Reports say the Department of State Services (DSS) recently held separate meetings with Muslim and Christian leaders in Osogbo, advising them to strengthen preventive security measures amid intelligence concerning possible attacks on places of worship and other public gathering points.
The state government nevertheless sought to reassure residents that Osun remains safe, while stressing that the security warnings should not be ignored.
Another significant decision from the Security Council meeting involves closer cooperation between the Osun State Ministry of Justice, Nigeria Police and DSS. The agencies agreed to improve coordination so that arrested suspects are properly investigated and, where evidence supports charges, prosecuted without unnecessary delay.
Governor Adeleke’s administration says it will continue providing logistical and operational support to security agencies as the new Joint Security Task Force begins operations.
The effectiveness of the initiative will ultimately depend on inter-agency coordination, intelligence gathering, adequate logistics and sustained cooperation between security agencies and local communities.
