The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has disclosed that Nigeria’s aviation market currently ranks fourth in Africa, highlighting the country’s significant position in the continent’s air transport industry.
The ranking underscores Nigeria’s importance as one of Africa’s major aviation markets, supported by its large population, growing demand for domestic and international air travel, and network of airports serving millions of passengers.
FAAN’s disclosure also draws attention to the opportunities available for further expansion of the sector through improved airport infrastructure, increased investment and better passenger services.
Nigeria is home to several major international and domestic airports, with Lagos and Abuja serving as key gateways for passenger and cargo movements.
Despite the size of the market, the country’s aviation industry continues to face challenges ranging from high operating costs and infrastructure requirements to foreign exchange pressures and the cost of aircraft maintenance.
Industry stakeholders have repeatedly emphasised the need for policies that encourage investment, improve operational efficiency and make Nigerian airports more competitive.
With Nigeria occupying the fourth position in Africa, attention is expected to focus on how the country can leverage its population and travel demand to expand passenger traffic, attract more international connections and strengthen its position within the African aviation industry.
